RWC Cornamusen |

The cornamuse originated in the late Middle Age and was widespread in the
Renaissance period. In the 17th century, with the musical transition from
the Renaissance to the Baroque, the cornamuse fell out of fashion. Since
mid-20th century it enjoyed a revival throughout Europe and North America
and, in addition to playing early music, it is occasionally used also in
folk and modern music.
The name is not to be confused with cornemuse, which is the French word
for bagpipes.
No cornamusen having survived to the present day, all the information we
have about this instrument is taken from paintings and the description made
in 'Syntagnum Musicum' by Michael Praetorius. Praetorius gives us the
clearest description we have of this instrument and defines its sound as
"quite similar to crumhorns, but quieter, lovelier, and very soft."
It is similar in many ways to the better known crumhorn and rauschpfeife,
although unlike those instruments, the bell of the cornamuse is closed. Like
the crumhorn, it has cylindrical bore and a double reed enclosed inside the
windcap, but it has a straight centre section ending in a small resonating
chamber instead of the crumhorn's distinctive "crook" open shape.
Cornamusen also have the same musical compass as the crumhorn family.
Perhaps designed for indoor use, the stopped end gives the cornamuse a
quieter tone and less strident than the crumhorn, allowing them to blend
well with recorders and other instruments.
