We chose the set of crumhorns in the the Brussels Conservatoire and
in the Gemeentemuseum as the models for our instruments. We visited the
museums, played the instruments, took accurate measurements and obtained
X-rays. From our researches we have made a set of crumhorns which we firmly
believe is the finest ever available.
A coated bore and specially designed plastic reed ensure they are easy to
play and maintain. With a cane reed the instruments give a full reedy sound.
With a range of just over an octave, some models have one or two extra keys
to provide a chromatic upward extension. The soprano and tenor standard
instruments are pitched in c (at a=440), and the alto and bass in f. It is
also common an alto in g.
Our Crumhorns are produced in five sizes and two sets.
Our finished soprano crumhorn is scaled from the tenor, no record
of a soprano having survived to the present day. The soprano crumhorn has
one upward extension key and a range of c' - e''.
Our finished f alto crumhorn is based on the alto in the famous
original set in the Gemeentemuseum, Holland. The f alto crumhorn has one
upward extension key and a range of f - a'.
Our finished g alto crumhorn is based on the alto in the set in
the Gemeentemuseum. The g alto crumhorn has no upward extension keys and a
range of g - a'.
Our finished tenor crumhorn is based on the tenor in the set in
the Gemeentemuseum. The tenor crumhorn has one upward extension key and a
range of c - e'.
Our finished bass crumhorn is based on the bass in the set in the
Gemeentemuseum. Our bass crumhorn has one upward extension key and a range
of F - a. The bass crumhorn also has a lower key for the bottom note, closed
by the little finger of either hand depending on whether the player is left
or right handed.
These instruments above are made from the finest
English sycamore and are presented with a plastic reed, a reed care and
maintenance leaflet and fingering chart.
An attractive 'attache' style carrying case and a
cane reed are available as optional extras if required.
Each instrument is entirely hand built by 'in-house'
experienced craftsmen to special order in our own workshops in Toledo (Spain) to the highest standard of craftsmanship.
They come with 12 months warranty and 12 months free access to our 'helpline' for
advice on setting up, playing and maintenance.
You can also have two sets witch offer a substantial saving over buying
the instruments individually.
The crumhorn ATTB set is the more historically accurate
arrangement of alto in g, two tenors in c and a bass in F, although the alto
in f is sometimes substituted.
The crumhorn SATB set is the conventional arrangement of soprano
in c', alto in f, tenor in c and bass in F.
A special attache style carrying case for
all four instruments is available as optional extras
if required. |
