Curtal

	RWC Curtals

The curtal (or dulcian as it was known in Germany) is a Renaissance bass woodwind instrument, with a double reed and a folded (doubled into a 'U') conical bore to produce a much more compact instrument than for example the larger shawms.

It flourished between 1550 and 1700, but was probably invented quite earlier. Towards the end of this period it co-existed with, and was then superseded by the baroque bassoon, although it continued to be used in Spain until early in the twentieth century. It was played in both secular and sacred contexts, throughout northern and western Europe, as well as in the New World.

They were made in several sizes including soprano (or descant), alto, tenor, bass, quartbass, quintbass, octavebass. The bass was the most important size. In Spain is probably where the smaller sizes were most widely used together with the German-speaking countries.

We manufacture three sizes of curtals: soprano, tenor and bass.

We only use carefully selected English sycamore for the body which after initial boring is reamed in stages to allow it to stabilise.

The fingerholes are accurately jig drilled and the internal bores treated with linseed oil.

All the keywork is hand made from 70/30 brass using traditional methods designed to produce a light positive action.

A hand drawn brass crook (bocal) and cane reed are matched to the finished instrument.

Our Bass Curtal in F has 2 keys and is based on the analysis of several instruments in European museums. The bass curtal, when played well, can reach as high as g' giving it a useful range of 2 1/2 octaves.

Our Tenor Curtal in c(G) has 2 keys and a range of a little over 2 octaves c - d''. The design is based on an illustration of curtals in Praetorius' "Syntagma Musicum".

The Soprano Curtal in c is the smallest member of the curtal family and has a range of 2 octaves c' - c'''. Our design is based on an illustration of curtals in Praetorius' "Syntagma Musicum".

Each instrument is entirely hand built by 'in-house' experienced craftsmen to special order in our own workshops in Toledo (Spain) to the highest standard of craftsmanship. They come with 12 months warranty and 12 months free access to our 'helpline' for advice on setting up, playing and maintenance.

A fitted hard case is available as optional extra if required.

Fingering chart and reed care sheet are included as standard.
