Symphony |
|
The symphony is one of the earliest examples of a 'wheel-bowed'
instrument, the best known of which is the hurdy gurdy.
Like the hurdy gurdy it is played by turning a rosined wheel which
touches the strings causing them to vibrate whilst the different notes are
produced by depressing keys which stop the strings at different positions.
But the symphony's wheel is much smaller as it is totally enclosed within
the rectangular body of the instrument. The body also acts as the tangent
box and houses the soundboard and strings making the symphony an extremely
compact instrument.
The symphony produces a quiet melodic sound entirely suitable for indoor
playing and vocal accompaniment.

Symphony |
|
The mediaeval pattern chosen for the Renaissance Workshop Company
symphony is based on 14th Century iconography and has one melody string (g)
set to a diatonic scale and two drones (D / G).
The tangents have been cleverly arranged so that different tuning modes
can be set within the diatonic scaling. Each instrument is entirely hand built by 'in-house'
experienced craftsmen to special order in our own workshops in Toledo (Spain) to the highest standard of craftsmanship.
They come with 12 months warranty and 12 months free access to our 'helpline' for
advice on setting up, playing and maintenance.
A simple hard case is available as an optional extra
if required. |
