Windcap |
|
Rauschpfeifen are instruments with a double reed in a windcap (like the
krumhorn and cornamuse) with a very wide conical bore, similar to a shawm
with windcap, that allows them to be overblown at the octave to give them a
range of an octave and a fifth.
The name comes from the German rausch (noise) or rusch (reed). It is an
instrument with a very powerful sound, which will project well in an outdoor
environment. Equally suitable for a traditional renaissance consort or folk
music where it may be used to accompany bagpipes.
Like the rest of the early reed instruments, the rauschpfeife could only
play chromatic tones outside the fundamental scale by using
cross-fingerings. This weakens the sound of some tones and produces rather
unsteady results when played by less experienced performers.
