The Renaissance shawm (forerunner of the modern oboe) is a double reed
instrument with a wide conical bore that flares quickly towards the end into
a large bell.
These two attributes (wide bore and large bell) give the shawm its
characteristic power and tone, making it suitable for outdoor playing and
use with large consorts. The strident sound of a shawm carries well in a
noisy environment.

RWC Shawm
Renaissance workshop company produces two sizes of shawms. Their
designs are based on originals in the Brussels Conservatoire Collection.
Carefully selected English sycamore is hand turned, bored, reamed, sanded
and polished by our own craftsmen.
Our finished Sopranino Shawm has a pirouette for the safe
adjustment of the cane reed and overblows at the octave to give a range of a
little over one and a half octaves, f' - d''.
The Soprano Shawm has a pirouette fitted onto a brass staple for
the safe handling of the cane reed. The Soprano is the most commonly used
voice of the shawm family having a playable range of two octaves c' - c'''.
Each instrument is entirely hand built to special
order by in house craftsmen in our own workshops in Toledo (Spain) and comes with 12 months warranty. |
